Have you ever read Dale Carnegie’s classic “How to Win Friends and Influence People?” Its a book worth reading more than once, in fact I brush up on it every year or so. This book was one of the keys to making me understand the importance of relationships and surrounding yourself with amazing people. So why surround yourself with “amazing people?”
Have you ever gotten frustrated about where you are in your life? Perhaps your job isn’t going the way you want it to or you have been having unsuccessful relationships. Now take a look back and think about the people you surrounded yourself with most often. Was it with people that inspired you to be better or was it with people that were constantly frustrated or negative about their live and what they have accomplished. I am going to guess that it was the latter.
Have you ever heard the theory that if you take the five closest people in your life and add their incomes up collectively, then took the average, that average would be very close to your actual income? I have been out with friends frustrated with their lives and had them do this exercise and many of them were floored. Why is this so significant? Let me explain.
If you want to earn $150,000 per year and you surround yourself with people who only make $50,000 per year, most of your conversations and interactions are going to be at the level of those people who only make $50,000 per year. No is it bad to only make $50,000 per year? No, of course not. BUT would you say that people who make $150,000 per year think differently than people that make $50,000 per year? OF COURSE.
This is not just about your desired income, its about your desired quality of life. If you want to be in a great relationship surround yourself by people who have found great relationships. If you want to get into philanthropy, find people that have given lots of time to philanthropic causes. If you want to lose 25 lbs and have a better physique and healthier lifestyle, find people with the lifestyle you desire and meet them. If you want to make millions in real estate, find people that have a similar interest or have done it already and become their friends. YES YOU CAN DO THIS!
Now here is the tough part. If you have one or two people in your life that are constantly negative and typically don’t support your dreams or goals, you may want to consider creating distance between the them. Nothing can crush your goals and aspirations quicker than a HATER.
That being said, if you are looking to take your life to the next level in any sense of the word (money, relationships, success, health, etc.) establish what level you want to get to by setting a goal. Change your thinking and attitude as if you are already at this level. Find nice people that are already at the level you desire and befriend them. Eliminate those people in your life that are holding you back.
No matter what your dreams and desires are, you will get there quicker by surrounding yourself with people that have a similar mindset and similar goal. Amazing, inspiring people can take you to new places you could have never imagined. So brush up by reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and remember, the quality of your life is directly proportional to the quality of people you have in your life.
